Memoir - Part 3

During vacation, my grand father used to take me to my maternal uncle's house. He was an executive engineer in irrigation department. He retired as a superintending engineer. He was associated with various irrigation projects of our state. He used to stay in the government quarters at the project sites. Hence, I had the opportunity and privilege of seeing and understanding the various aspects of implementation of big irrigation projects. Hemavathy Reservoir project, Gorur is one of such projects, I have closely watched.

Gorur is in Hassan district, 25 kms away from Hassan and 5 kms from Arkalgud. Sakleshpur, being a coffee plantation area was considered as the richest taluk in Hassan district. Arsikere and Channarayapatna were famous for coconut gardens. They export coconut, copra considerably. Other taluks were considered as poor taluks, as they had no sufficient water source and other infrastructure for sustained growth of agriculture. The district is predominantly agriculture oriented as there are no major industries. Since I belonged to Sakleshpur, I was getting considerable attention from all wherever I go! Taluks like Holenarasipur, Arkalgud were growing dry crops and paddy seasonally.

When the survey commenced for construction of a dam at Gorur, there were rumours that Sakleshpur will be submerged in backwaters. Lot of sacrifices and compromises have been done by the people who were behind the proposed dam site. A good number of villages, agricultural lands, forest lands, temples have been submerged in backwaters. Those who were rendered landless were offered alternative lands and places. Most of the land losers have not opted for the lands offered by government as they were useless. A good number of land losers got petty compensation and left the place. At that time, farmers had no bargaining power and they had to settle for what the government sanctioned. A few middlemen, contractors and officialdom had a merry time. The agony and disappointment of people dislodged is beyond words and expression. Emotions of people leaving their land and place, temple, close friends and relatives are beyond imagination and cannot be explained.

Hemavathy Dam, Gorur
The construction started and Gorur, which was a small sleepy village, grew into a medium city. All sorts of people, all sorts of entertainment, all means of communication, transport were established in Gorur. All sorts of machinery were roaring. A mechanical division was established by the department for maintenance of their vehicles and machinery. The economic scenario of  Hassan slowly began to change. Land price, house rent shot up. New hotels, cinema theatres were established. Clubs and group quarrels started. Several banks opened branches in Hassan. If these were the signs of development, then yes there was development.

Finally, the dam was constructed. The Chief Minister and Irrigation Minister were personally monitoring the progress of construction. They used to see the photographs of the dam being constructed regularly. If my memories are correct, Sri Veerendra Patil was the chief minister and Sri.H.N.Nanjegowda was the irrigation minister. The dam is a marvellous engineering feat.

Hemavathy Back Waters
Sakleshpur, Alur and Belur taluks fall behind the dam and as a result are not beneficiaries of the project. All other taluks have been benefited. Hassan city got drinking water. All the benefited taluks are today flourishing. Holenarasipur and Channarayapatna have changed their cropping pattern and have included paddy(irrigated), sugarcane and other commercial crops like banana, mulberry etc to their list. People who had no voice, who were meek (humble) are very strong both politically and economically. Every house has a car or at least a motor cycle. Commercial activities are buzzing in towns. Tumkur and Mandya are the other districts benefited from the project. Drinking water was scarce in Tumkur. Now abundantly available in the entire district.

Arkalgud, the dam site's taluk head quarter is just 5 km away from the dam down stream. Surprisingly, there is no adequate drinking water in the town even after the completion of the project. A tank lying at the centre of the town is converted to a play ground and bus-stand. This tank should have been retained and refurbished so that ground water table would have increased and would have been helpful in quenching the thirst. Due to closure of tank agricultural activities surrounding it has come to an end. Gardens have been converted as sites and sold. Almost all tanks in villages have been encroached upon and destroyed. All these tanks should have been retained and refilled/revitalised by Hemavathy waters so that there would be no scarcity of water at any time. Every village should have a tank mandatorily.

There were plans to develop a garden around the dam like Brindavan Gardens in KRS. I do not know the present position. This is the live example for "anything is possible if there is a political will."

Any body may claim credit for the construction of dam. But in my view, the people who have lost their base and everything and have sacrificed for the sake of the dam are the real heros.

Sri Yoganarasimhaswamy temple is an ancient temple in Gorur. Mavinakere is near by, where there are Sri Ranganathaswamy and Lord Venkateshwara temples. Mavinakere aquaduct is another marvellous engineering feat which must be seen. A piligrim cum sight seeing trip to Gorur will be certainly rewarding.

Memoir - Part 2

School trip during my primary/secondary education meant a visit to Manzarabad fort by foot. I still remember when I was in class IV. We, 50 students and 3 teachers on a sunny day went to fort by foot. We were asked to bring our own lunch pack.

The fort is about 6 Km away from our town towards Mangalore, on the National High Way 48. The fort was constructed by Tipu Sultan when he was the ruler of Mysore. The fort is located very strategically and was used for defense purposes. One can easily understand the locational advantage of the fort in his visit. A panoramic view of a large stretch of western ghats can be had from the top of the fort. Any movement of the enemy can be easily watched from the fort in any direction. The builders ability and their architectural knowledge throws a challenge to modern developers. The fort is constructed on a fairly big hill and a beautiful scenic view of the surroundings will certainly be cherished. The fort is reported to have been used as an armoury and guard place. There are two tunnels and a pond at the centre of the fort. The tunnels are said to have a underground route to Srirangapatna. But I have my own doubt about this claim.  The place is ideal for a day's picnic. One would certainly remember the visit due to its beauty.

A view of sun set from Manzarabad fort
We went by route march and through out our journey we were singing some patriotic, devotional songs. By the time we reached our destination all of us were exhausted and most of us could not have our lunch due to tiredness. After spending time over there till evening we were asked to climb down. We were reluctant to return as we were not in a position to walk. Luckily, our teachers, at the foot of the fort would find a lorry and arranged for a drop. We reached home happily.

I have made several visits to fort. In one of my visits, I found a lot of people were seen at the fort. Normally the fort would be deserted. A baba was camping in the fort and had occupied a tunnel. People were visiting him in the tunnel and taking his blessings. There is no ventilation or light in the tunnel. I went half way and returned scared. The tunnel is closed at the half way. If it were to be closed at the opening baba wouldn't have place to give his    personal darshan.

Archaeological department is protecting the fort by installing a board at the base that it is a protected monument! Nothing else has been done. Inside the fort grass and weeds have spread all over. It is not been cut occasionally and maintained properly. The old fort wall is not strengthened and protected. My latest visit to the fort was in Dec 2010. It is really a beautiful monument to be preserved for our future generations for its grandeur, architectural supremacy, symmetrical construction, historic values, and what not. An already ruined fort may not sustain this kind of negligence for long.

 Manzarabad Fort, Sakleshpur

On the way to fort from Sakleshpur, there is a coffee estate called Bhimeswara estate. There is a small natural water fall. We used to invariably visit that spot and spend some time playing in water cooling our heals. Now, due to high influx of tourists, I am told that the estate owners have banned unauthorised entry. The road to Manzarabad fort stretches between coffee estates and wet lands with more than ten zig-zag curves. The entire journey is bountiful with nature's beauty.

Memoir - Part I

I was born and brought up at Sakleshpur, a beautiful, picturesque town in the malnad belt. The town is surrounded by green hills and coffee estates. River Hemavathy flows amidst the town and during my boyhood, water in the river was crystal clear and very sweet. But due to the growth of so-called modern civilisation and the neglect of the inhabitants, water and the river bed are so polluted that nobody wishes to have a stroll on the sands and go near water. Now, we will have to wash our hands with soap if we touch the river water.

An iron and steel bridge was constructed across the river by the British which attained 100th year during my primary school days. The bridge was quite strong and I am happy that I have also used that bridge. As the traffic increased and the government felt that the bridge was old and weak, a new concrete bridge was constructed abandoning the old bridge. The construction of new bridge took 5-6 years. A lot of people from Tamilnadu and Kerala took part in the construction of new bridge. I have not noticed any localite indulging in the construction activity of the new bridge. The old bridge is abandoned and retained beside the newly constructed(in 60's) as a monument (without any maintenance).
The town reminds me of any hill station. The houses are constructed on hillocks and the hills are standing on paddy fields. Beside these hills, there are coffee plantations with lots and lots of thick green trees. Average rainfall was of the order of 150-180 cm per year. Now the rains, winds and their intensity are reduced and the present average rainfall is 80-90 cm per year. The reduction is mainly due to deforestation in and around the town.

The population of the town was 10000-12000 during 60's and now it is estimated to be 35000. There was no college at that time. I studied at E.H.Young's municipal high school up to SSLC. There were only two middle schools, two primary schools and one Urdu school. My primary education was event free at a school opposite to my house. The school building was in a dilapidated condition and subsequently it collapsed and I was shifted to the town middle school. A new school building was constructed after some years.

My High School - E.H.Young's School, Sakleshpur
I had a happy boyhood. There was no caste discrimination what so ever. We studied and played together. We were participating in Mohurrum procession and we were given sweets and prasadams by Muslim priests. Some of my father's Muslim friends were coming to our house to eat hoLiges(obbattu) after Gowri-Ganesha, Ugadi festival. It gives me pleasure to state that the great poet Sri.S.K.Karim Khan happens to be one of my father's friends, who had blessed my marriage.

Though, I am from a poor family, my friends, (some of them were sons of big coffee planters and merchants - stinking rich) were very friendly with me. There was not even an iota of status difference among us. I had very efficient, able and good teachers at the town middle school and high school. One teacher at the middle school was very good at English grammar but he was very sparingly teaching us. He used to play cards during night and sleep in the class room during our class hours. Whenever, he had the mood to teach, he taught grammar excellently. Similarly, at high school one teacher with the same habit used to teach us social studies and moral sciences. He used to tell moral stories hours together and we never felt it boring.

My town middle school was about 2 Km from my house and high school at 4 Km. I used to walk the distance very comfortably. I was coming to my house for lunch. Lunch break was 45 minutes. Apart from this, I was learning Hindi at a distance of 2 Km from my house. Hindi classes were held between 6 and 8 a.m. We were playing ball badminton and table tennis in evenings. Cricket was not popular at that time. Some physically strong students were playing kabbaddi, khokho etc. During rainy season (between June and Sept) it used to rain very heavily and I was carrying my lunch to school. No plays in the evening. We enjoyed watching rain in the evening and on holidays. Sunshine was a rarity during rainy days. We were trained to use umbrella. Rain coat was expensive and rarely used. By the time we reached school, we would have drenched and had to sit in the class room fully wet. By the time we'd return home the clothes would have dried a little but return trip would wet the clothes again and we used to dry them at home on fire/charcoal. Due to the weather conditions, during rainy season and winter we were feeling very hungry and we used to eat voraciously. But for the weather vagary, it was healthy. We were never sick during rainy season.

Those days, cooking gas was not available even in cities. We were dependant on firewood. It was abundantly available. It was to be collected and stocked well ahead before the commencement of monsoon. Hot water for all purposes was available always during rainy season and food was always served hot during that period.

To be continued..........
